The music to this film is the contribution to the Zurich International Film Music Competition 2024.
The fish in the opening sequence is given a simple rising violin part, which stands for the moving element, the sea. Furthermore, the boats are followed by a shanty-like melody, with a crescendo towards the explosives. A relatively long pause builds anticipation towards the explosion which is followed by a repetitive theme where the sailor is floating in water above the city.
As childhood is remembered, the music shifts to the more melancholic, before he is lifted towards the clouds by heavenly trumpets increasingly towards his own conception. Then a pause in the music, only with a slight pulse, reflects the closeness to death before the sailor is thrown into memories of adulthood accompanied by the initial sounds, but now in dramatic orchestration.
A pause in the music again builds tension until the sailor falls towards earth and back into the explosion. In the final sequence, the fish from the first scene dies followed by a single fading violin, but the sailor lives and gets a nimble da capo by the shanty.
